Evolution and spread of stem rust race Ug-99 has created an alarming global situation. Majority of the CIMMYT germplasm protected by gene Sr31 fell susceptible to this catastrophic strain. Like other parts of the world stem rust of wheat was very successfully controlled in Pakistan by the introduction of resistant germplasm during and after green revolution. In 2001 stem rust reappeared and hit many commercial varieties in the province of Sindh. Its sporadic infections were recorded in 2005 summer crop of Kaghan followed by 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 spring crops of Sindh. In a regional scenario, where by wheat crop of the whole CWANA region was threatened by the Ug-99, it was thought that the crop is attacked by Ug-99. To date data from the stem rust TRAP nurseries and analysis of the disease samples is presented here to clarify the situation about presence/absence of Ug-99 in Pakistan. Commercial cultivars resistant to local stem rust race and genes effective against local and Ug-99 races are identified and their implications to improve stem rust resistance of Pakistani cultivars are discussed.

Harvest is a hard red spring wheat that meets the end-use quality specifications of the Canada Western Red Spring wheat class. Harvest is adapted to the wheat growing regions of the Canadian prairies based on data from the Central Bread Wheat Cooperative Registration Test conducted in 1998, 1999 and 2000 and grown in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The overall grain yield of Harvest was significantly higher compared with the check cultivars Neepawa, Roblin, AC Majestic and AC Barrie, but yielded significantly less than the check cultivar McKenzie. Harvest matured similar to McKenzie and Neepawa, 1 d later than Roblin, 1 d earlier than AC Barrie and significantly earlier than AC Majestic. Harvest was significantly shorter than the check cultivars and had the lowest lodging scores. The test weight of Harvest was similar to McKenzie and AC Barrie and significantly higher than Neepawa, Roblin and AC Majestic. Harvest demonstrated moderate resistance to leaf rust and loose smut and very good resistance to stem rust. Resistance to common bunt was fair, similar to Neepawa and AC Barrie. Resistance to Fusarium head blight was similar to the susceptible check Roblin and poorer than the other checks. Harvest had very good preharvest sprouting resistance with lower sprouting scores than the best check in 2 of 3 years of testing, and it maintained its falling numbers after natural or artificial weathering of spikes. End-use quality tests indicated that Harvest was within the range of the checks for most end-use quality traits.

Durum wheat [Triticum durum] cv. Creso has been mentioned as having durable resistance to leaf rust (caused by P. triticina [P. recondita]). However, an average final disease level of 70S on the modified Cobb scale was scored on Creso across three locations in inoculated field trials in France during 2009. A mixture of two durum wheat leaf rust isolates commonly found in France was used for the inoculation, one was virulent on Lr23 and the other was avirulent on this gene. On cv. Llareta Inia and breeding line Somateria, both of which carry the resistance gene Lr14a, the average final disease levels were 95S and 80S, respectively. Creso, Llareta Inia and Somateria registered average final disease levels of 0, 10S and 1.0, respectively, in field trials inoculated with race CBG/BP in 2009 at two locations in Mexico (Ciudad Obregon and El Batan). Virulence for Lr14a in durum wheat leaf rust populations was already mentioned to be present in France since 2000. It has been suggested that the resistance of Creso, which has remained durable in Italy since 1975, could be due to a gene close to but different from Lr14a.
