Title: Rust resistance will be featured at upcoming Plant and Animal Genome Conference For any BGRI members attending PAG in a couple weeks, this workshop is not to be missed. Organizers Sarah Davidson of the BGRI, Jan Leach from Colorado State University, and Hei Leung from IRRI have brought together a powerhouse of scientists on the frontline of rust research. PAG -- the International Plant and Animal Genome Conference is the largest annual forum on recent developments in genome projects. Held in San Diego California, the 2012 gathering expects to draw 2,500 scientists in plant and animal research.
Among the dozens of workshops to be held over the six days of sessions will be “Genomics for Plant Disease: Harnessing Pathogen Genomics to Protect World Grain Supplies,” on Saturday January 14, 2012. With a focus on molecular approaches to achieving rust disease resistance this two-hour session will feature five scientists active in the discovery of approaches to breeding for durable rust resistance in cereals. Here’s the speaker line-up and their topics:
Jorge Dubkovsky, Dept. Plant Sciences, University of California, Davis New approaches to rust resistance in wheat
Jessica Rutkoski, Cornell University Genomic selection to accelerate breeding for complex stem rust resistance
Michael Ayliffe, CSIRO, Australia Non-host resistance to cereal rusts
John Fellers, Kansas State University Using the rust pathogen’s effectors to identify disease resistance genes
Shunyuan Xiao, University of Maryland Understanding the host-pathogen-interface to create novel resistance to haustorium-forming pathogens
