Title: Indian wheat varieties resistant to Ug99

Out of 318 Indian wheat lines screened at Kenya in 2008, 78 lines were found resistant to Ug99 including released varieties viz., like DL 788-2, VL 404, NI 5439, Lok 1, COW (W) 1, HI 977, HS 295, and HUW 234 (bread wheat); A 9-30-1, AKDW 2997-16, Bijaga Yellow, WH 896, HD 4672, , MACS 1967, MACS 2846 and NIDW 295 (durum wheat); DDK 1029 and NP 200 (dicoccums) and TL 2942 (Triticale).

Many of the advance lines in coordinated trials have also shown resistance. These are mainly AKAW 4627 (PZ &CZ-IR-LS), GW 1245 (CZ-RF/RI-TS), WH 1062 (NWPZ-IR-LS), HI 8680 (d) & HI 8682 (d) (PZ-IR-TS), HI 8681 (d) (NWPZ-IR-TS) while MACS 2971 is the newly released dicoccum wheat variety. The diversity of resistance shown in some of these varieties at once again proves distinguishing feature of the vibrant Indian wheat programme.
